President Trump taking to Truth Social
to pressure India as negotiations
continue. He writes, quote, they have
now offered to cut their tariffs to
nothing, but it's getting late. They
should have done so years ago. This is
all coming as India is now facing a 50%
US tariff. Let's bring in Bloomberg's
Brendan Murray who tracks global trade
for us. So Brendan, has India actually
suggested it may drop its US tariffs to
zero? Because we're hearing from the US
side, not much as I've seen from the
India side.
Yeah, exactly. We haven't heard offici
uh any official confirmation of this
from the Indian side. We did hear the
Indian trade minister say that there is
a dialogue that's continuing uh to go
back and forth between Washington and
New Delhi. But uh this is a long way
from where we were just a couple of
months ago. India uh was in the front of
the pack uh to get it get a trade deal
with the US and the Trump
administration. Uh they were sounding
very confident that they would get a
break the breakthrough that they needed
and it would come in phases. uh two two
or three phases of talks over the over
into the uh into the fall of the year.
Uh but that's all that's all gone away
and we uh we've heard the Treasury
Secretary Scott Bessant talk about
India's recalentrance and we've heard uh
the the White House trade adviser Peter
Navaro uh criticize India for for buying
Russian oil and calling it Mod's war.
And so the rhetoric is really heated up
and that's not an environment where uh
trade negotiators are going to sit down
and make any progress. Uh the goal from
the two sides now, it seems, is to uh
cool the uh cool the rhetoric, try to
get back to negotiating table and and
press forward with uh the progress that
they've made to so Yeah.
